Biography
Mr. Ashkan qualified in 1993 with a commendation in medicine and a first class honours degree in biochemistry. He underwent dual postgraduate training in surgery and medicine at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Hammersmith and Royal Brompton Hospitals, obtaining the MRCP in 1997 and the FRCS of England and Glasgow in 1998.
Thereafter, he underwent higher specialist training in general neurosurgery at Kings College, The National, Atkinson Morley's, Charing Cross, Great Ormond Street and Princess Royal Hospitals, being awarded the FRCS in Neurosurgery in 2002. His subspecialist training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery included a fellowship in France with Prof. Benabid, generally considered as the founder of the modern deep brain stimulation, which led to a MD degree. He was a senior lecturer in functional neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from 2004 to 2006.
He was appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon, honorary senior lecturer in image guided and functional neurosurgery, and lead clinician for neuro-oncology at Kings College Hospital London in 2007. Mr. Ashkan has published over 90 full papers, abstracts and book chapters.
